Auditory Processing of Polymorphemic Pseudowords

چکیده

This study compared models of auditory word recognition as they relate to the processing of polymorphemic pseudowords. Semantic transparency ratings were obtained in a preliminary rating study. The effects of morphological structure, semantic transparency, prefix likelihood, and morphemic frequency measures were examined in a lexical decision experiment. Reaction times and errors were greater for pseudowords carrying a genuine prefix, and this effect was largest for pseudowords that also carried a genuine root. While results were grossly similar for bound and free root types, there were also some important differences. Regression analyses provided additional support for decompositional models: semantic transparency, prefix likelihood, prefix frequency, and root frequency all affected pseudoword rejection times. The results are most compatible with a modification of Taft’s (1994) interactive-activation model or a dual-route model. © 2000 Academic Press

Immediate Auditory Repetition of Words and Nonwords: An ERP Study of Lexical and Sublexical Processing

ERPs were elicited to (1) words, (2) pseudowords derived from these words, and (3) nonwords with no lexical neighbors, in a task involving listening to immediately repeated auditory stimuli. There was a significant early (P200) effect of phonotactic probability in the first auditory presentation, which discriminated words and pseudowords from nonwords; and a significant somewhat later (N400) ef...

Differences in auditory processing of words and pseudowords: an fMRI study.

Although there has been great interest in the neuroanatomical basis of reading, little attention has been focused on auditory language processing. The purpose of this study was to examine the differential neuroanatomical response to the auditory processing of real words and pseudowords. Eight healthy right-handed participants performed two phoneme monitoring tasks (one with real word stimuli an...

The reading ability of good and poor temporal processors among a group of college students.

In this study, we examined whether good auditory and good visual temporal processors were better than their poor counterparts on certain reading measures. Various visual and auditory temporal tasks were administered to 105 undergraduates. They read some phonologically regular pseudowords and irregular words that were presented sequentially in the same ("word" condition) and in different ("line"...

Title: Predictive coding of phonological rules in auditory cortex: A mismatch

The brain is constantly generating predictions of future sensory input to enable efficient adaptation. In the auditory domain, this applies also to the processing of speech. Here we aimed to determine whether the brain predicts the following segments of speech input on the basis of language-specific phonological rules that concern non-adjacent phonemes. Auditory event-related potentials (ERP) w...

Word frequency modulates morpheme-based reading in poor and skilled Italian readers

A previous study reported that, similar to young and adult skilled readers, Italian developmental dyslexics read pseudowords made up of a root and a derivational suffix faster and more accurately than simple pseudowords. Unlike skilled readers, only dyslexic and reading-matched younger children benefited from morphological structure in reading words aloud. In this study, we show that word frequ...
